The Dam of Montejaque

Montejaque

Located in the heart of the Grazalema mountains near Ronda - just an hour’s drive from Casa Joepapa - Montejaque offers a unique blend of dramatic karst landscapes, engineering history, white-village charm, and natural cave wonders.

Day Trip Tip from Casa Joepapa: Montejaque & The Historic "Ghost Dam" ⛰️💦

If you are staying at Casa Joepapa and looking for a scenic mountain day trip filled with breathtaking nature, history, and incredible views, Montejaque is an absolute must-visit! Nestled in the Serranía de Ronda (roughly 10–15 minutes past Ronda and just over an hour from Manilva), this picturesque area offers dramatic rock formations, a historic engineering marvel, and vibrant village life. 🇪🇸☀️

The Story of Presa de Montejaque: A Century-Old Engineering Marvel

The centerpiece of this excursion is the famous Presa de Montejaque (also known as Presa de los Caballeros). Built in 1923, this impressive double-curvature arch dam stands over 83 meters high. However, due to the porous karst limestone terrain beneath it, water historically leaked into underground cave systems, leaving the reservoir dry for most of its century-long existence — earning it the nickname "the ghost dam."

Everything changed during the historic torrential rains of early 2026! For the first time in over 100 years, the reservoir filled completely, and the dam acted as a vital massive barrier against torrential floodwaters. In an incredible spectacle, the water level rose to within just 30–40 centimeters of overflowing before safely releasing through the upper spillways. The century-old structure held firm under immense pressure, proving its legendary strength! We highly recommend checking out the amazing YouTube video footage of this historic moment.

Scenic Hikes, Cueva del Hundidero & Cueva del Gato

Beyond the dam, the surrounding landscape offers spectacular hiking opportunities surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs and dramatic gorges:

Cueva del Hundidero & Cave System: Right next to the dam lies the massive entrance to Cueva del Hundidero. This cave forms part of a famous underground karst system that connects all the way through the mountain to Cueva del Gato on the other side!

White Village Charm: After exploring the gorge, drive into the quiet whitewashed village of Montejaque for a stroll along its cobblestone streets and enjoy a traditional Andalusian meal or tapas in the village square.

Via Ferrata Note: The gorge previously featured a popular Via Ferrata route. However, due to landslides caused by intense water discharge following the 2026 storms, ❌ the via ferrata is currently closed ❌ and out of service. While you can't climb it right now, visiting the site to admire the sheer rock walls and dramatic setting is still 100% worth it!

Why Montejaque is Worth It:

  1. Unique Engineering & Geological History: Marvel at Europe's iconic century-old arch dam set inside a wild limestone canyon.

  2. Dramatic Mountain Scenery: Towering cliffs, deep gorges, and lush mountain valleys ideal for photography and hiking.

  3. Charming White Village Experience: Pair outdoor exploration with great food and warm hospitality in Montejaque pueblo.

  4. Convenient Day Trip Location: Just 10–15 minutes from Ronda and roughly an hour from Casa Joepapa.

Tips for Instagram-Worthy Moments:

📍 Presa de Montejaque Viewpoint: Shoot from the edge of the canyon to capture the scale of the 83-meter-high curved dam walls.

📍 Cueva del Hundidero Entrance: Take an impressive wide-angle photo under the towering rock archway of the cave entrance.

📍 Montejaque Village Plazas: Capture charming, flower-filled alleys and whitewashed streets framed by rugged mountain peaks.

📍 Cueva del Gato Waters: Snap crystal-clear turquoise waters flowing from the cave exit near Benaoján.

Pro Parking Tip: when visiting the dam and Cueva del Hundidero, park directly along the main road pull-off area designated for the trailhead along the MA-8403 road..

Pro Hiking & Visitor Tip: wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction, as the paths around the dam and canyon descent can be rocky and uneven. If you plan to extend your trip to Cueva del Gato, bring a light jacket as temperatures drop near the cave openings even on warm days!
