If you’ve never heard of Benadalid or Benalauria don’t be surprised — it’s completely off the beaten track and definitely not among the typical tourist spots, but that’s exactly what makes it so special! We absolutely fell in love with it, which is why it earned a top spot on our day trip recommendations.
If you’re staying at Casa Joepapa and looking for an unforgettable outdoor thrill surrounded by untouched Andalusian nature, a day trip to the Via Ferrata Benadalid / Benalauría is an absolute must! Located less than an hour from Manilva, this epic mountain route is the ultimate one-day excursion for mountain lovers, hikers, and adrenaline seekers staying on the Costa del Sol. 🇪🇸☀️
Thrilling Climbs, Suspension Bridges & Epic Canyon Views
This route sits nicely elevated a few hundred meters above the surrounding valley, offering impressive exposure without needing high-altitude alpine training. Once you begin climbing, you will experience incredible vertical routes, suspension bridges spanning real canyon drops, and breathtaking mountain vistas stretching across the Serranía de Ronda and the Genal Valley. It is easily one of the best via ferratas in Andalusia!
Why Via Ferrata Benadalid / Benalauría is Worth It:
Elevated Mountain Views: Perched above the valley, offering dramatic canyon drops and spectacular panoramic views without alpine heights.
Diverse Outdoor Challenges: Features vertical climbing walls, exciting suspension bridges, and technical iron-rung sections.
Pure Mountain Nature: Escape the coastal crowds and immerse yourself in the untouched wilderness near Casares and the Genal Valley.
Convenient Location: Less than an hour’s drive from Casa Joepapa, making it an easy and action-packed day trip.
Tips for Instagram-Worthy Moments:
📍 Mid-Climb Action Shot: Capture your climb against the sheer limestone cliffs with the Genal Valley stretching far below in the background.
📍 Suspension Bridge Reel: Film an epic POV reel while crossing the high suspension bridges spanning the canyon gaps.
📍 Stone Cairn Trailhead Shots: Snap moody, atmospheric photos along the wild approach trail following the traditional stone cairns (hitos).
📍 Summit Panorama: Record a 360-degree video at the top, showcasing the rugged mountain ridges of the Serranía de Ronda.
Pro Access & Navigation Tip: from the nearest practical parking spot, expect a steep 1.0 to 1.5 km uphill hike to reach the starting point. The access road can be tough for regular cars (SUVs handle it much better and can get closer), and the trail is not always obvious—keep an eye out for small stone cairns (hitos) guiding the way! 🪨🚶♂️
Pro Equipment & Timing Tip: bring proper climbing gloves to protect your hands on the iron rungs and steel cables, and wear sturdy trail-running or approach shoes with good grip. Start your climb early in the morning, especially during warmer months, as the rock faces absorb heat and there is minimal shade on the route.
Safety & Gear First ⛑️💪
Via ferrata climbing requires proper safety gear (harness, via ferrata lanyard with energy absorber, helmet, and sturdy footwear). Never go alone, check local weather conditions beforehand, and ensure everyone in your group is experienced or accompanied by a certified guide!
